How long does setup take?

Most organisations complete guided setup in an afternoon. You can then run your environmental accounts alongside your bookkeeping — because it's largely the same data.

Do we need a sustainability consultant to get started?

No. PI pre-selects the activity categories most common to your industry, so you're not starting from a blank page. A sustainability expert is useful for set up, but the day-to-day recording is designed for finance and operations teams. Our accredited partners can handle setup if you need help — then you run it in-house indefinitely.

What does "guided setup" actually involve?

You tell PI what your organisation does. It pre-selects the activity categories that typically apply — electricity, fuel, travel, purchased goods, commuting, waste. You toggle on what's relevant, toggle off what isn't, and start recording. Progress tracking shows you what's complete and what's next across every account.

Can we import data from our existing systems?

Yes. Activity data can be imported from CSVs and common accounting exports. You can also drag and drop invoices, bills of materials, and other data sources and PI will scan and upload relevant datapoints.

What's the difference between a business user and a sustainability expert in PI?

The same activity, viewed through two different lenses. A business user enters "Mike's van, 452km" and sees results in those same terms. A sustainability expert, working in the background, matches that entry to the precise LCA source — large diesel passenger vehicle, EURO 5, regional fuel mix. The methodology lives in the expert view. What do you mean by TNFD-Ready

The outputs of PI map to the core metrics of TNFD, so by the time you have completed your Planetary Accounts, you are well on your way for a full TNFD assessment. If you need help to get from your PI results to full TNFD reporting our partners can help.

What footprints are assessed.

PI assesses fossil and biogenic carbon/greenhouse gasses, water, waste, biodiversity, air pollution, nitrogen, phosphorus, deforestation, and ozone depletion.

What does % RDL mean?

Recommended Daily Limit, per full-time equivalent. Each planetary boundary has a total annual safe operating budget. Divide by the global population and by 365, and you get a per-person, per-day limit — the RDL. Expressing your organisation's impact as a percentage of that limit, normalised by headcount and reporting period, makes results comparable across organisations of different sizes, industries, and geographies.

What is the Planetary Accounting Framework?

A peer-reviewed methodology developed by Dr Kate Meyer (our CEO) and Professor Peter Newman that translates the Planetary Boundaries into quantified budgets applicable to products, organisations, and economies. It's stewarded by the Planetary Accounting Network, a New Zealand-based charitable trust.

Where do the impact factors come from?

Scientifically validated databases covering thousands of materials, processes, and energy sources. Every factor is traceable to its source methodology, so every result is auditable

What types of products can be assessed?

PI for Products supports any product or service with a definable supply chain. From food and beverages to buildings, from consulting services to conferences - if you can map the inputs and processes, you can assess it.

The data PI produces is the raw material those frameworks ask for: measured, traceable, evidence-backed impact across the full set of planetary boundaries. We don't produce compliance filings directly, but the underlying accounts and audit trails are structured to support them.
